Why Liars Lie

I’m compelled to write about this subject because the lies being told by the liars who have managed to lie themselves into the most powerful offices of the U.S. government deserves our attention. It’s not that lying is a new thing; liars have been lying as far back as you want to look. It’s just that the amount of lying, the depth of the lying, and the depravity of the lying seems so overt and in your face that I’m moved to write about it if not just for the need to let it out; to find relief in saying it out loud.

For me, this subject is really just a continuation of my last post, I Listened… And Believed. If you’ve fathered children, you might have been struck by how lying seemed to come so easy to your children; and about the pettiest, most inconsequential things, things that weren’t even going to get them in “trouble”.  Like:

“Hey, stop picking your nose?”

“I wasn’t.  I was just scratching…”

I mean, it’s what kids do when they think they’re going to get in trouble for something they know they’re guilty of; not every child, sure, but on average, the majority.  It’s just part of growing up.  Parents have to raise their children to understand that lying is wrong and it not only hurts you because people will end up not trusting you, but it also hurts the people you’re lying to or about. You know, pretty basic parenting stuff. And then there are the extremes of how effective you are as a parent.

It’s one thing to teach your child not to lie while setting the example of being honest and truthful as much as your child’s development and maturity allows.  It’s yet another thing to try to teach your child not to lie while lying to him/her somehow about various things along the way. I mean, you might fool them for a while, but one day they’ll find out you’ve been lying to them about whatever and if they trusted you up to that point, probably not so much after.

Another aspect of raising your children not to lie is the question as to by what or by whose authority are you teaching them.  To me, this is what has caused the ever-widening gap in just straight up honesty in the day-to-day relationships of our lives.  On the one hand, use to be that “honesty is the best policy” was an underlying premise accepted by most, and was largely attributed to living a God filled/Christian life consistent with the golden rule; “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

Not so much anymore…

Today it seems the golden rule has been cast aside and God with it in the name of getting ahead by any means necessary. “If I gotta lie to get what I want in life or to avoid the consequences of bad choices and bad decisions I make, then so be it.”

Colossians 3:9

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

People who fully adopt this approach to life can’t help but delve into deeper and deeper levels of lying to the extent that almost every word that comes out of their mouth is a lie.  Those people are the real reason I’m writing this post. They’re the ones who, by any means necessary, have lied their way to the top and currently hold extremely powerful positions in government and unelected/fraudulently elected bureaucrats making decisions in the highest office of the land based on lie after lie, after lie.

The thing that bothers me the most is that as they lie to our face, they either don’t know or maybe more likely don’t care that many God fearing Christians and dare I say many non-Christians see right through their lies.  And what do they do in the face of that realization?  They just keep on lying…

Does that remind you of anyone?  For me, it reminds me of a child and specifically a child who was either never taught that lying is wrong and hurtful, or possibly taught that in certain circumstances lying could be justified…  “the end justifies the means” kind of approach to life.  That’s who we’re dealing with in the government today; people with the mind of a child, immature to their core, using lying to get their way or to cover up their guilt. And the most evil thing about their behavior is that they think no one can see through them, see their “true colors” as it were.  And maybe they don’t care if we can see through them, which defines the depths of how evil they are.

I usually try to refrain from using such language because I think it’s lost on those who are lost. Telling someone they peddle in evil things when they are dishonest to the extent that they will never speak the truth seems to get you nowhere. If, in fact, you’re trying to persuade them to reflect or to be introspective.  So many political figures and media figures in the public sphere and discourse seem to lie about everything.  Almost every word that comes out of their mouth is a lie. It is evil and it is of the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.

 John 8:42-45

Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

Why do ye not understand my speech? [even] because ye cannot hear my word.

Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

And because I tell [you] the truth, ye believe me not.

I realize this a very broad stroke, but if you’re a non-believer, then God is not your Father.  And as a non-believer, if all you do is lie, and not just openly lie when in front of a camera, but lie to yourself, to family, to friends, and pretty much in any and every aspect of your life, ye are of your father the devil.

But alas, all is not lost for these non-believers because the gospel of the grace of God is preached unto all the world and all that is required is to turn from darkness…

 Act 26:18

To open their eyes, [and] to turn [them] from darkness to light, and [from] the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
